    About the Hijri calendar

The Islamic calendar counts years from the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah. Its twelve months follow the moon, so a Hijri year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, and Ramadan moves through the seasons over about 33 years.

Each month begins when the new crescent is seen. This page uses the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is worked out in advance. Many countries, including Sri Lanka, begin the month by local sighting, so the date there can be one day different. Use the correction above to match your country.

    The white days

The 13th, 14th and 15th of each Hijri month are the “white days” (Ayyam al-Bid), when the moon is full. Fasting on them is a Sunnah.
