Hold the phone flat, away from metal and electrical things. If the compass seems wrong, move the phone in a figure of eight once.
How the Qibla is found
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). This page works out the shortest path over the globe from your city to the Kaaba and gives its direction as a bearing: the number of degrees clockwise from true north. North is 0°, east 90°, south 180° and west 270°.
Using it without a compass
Find north first, for example from a map app or the sun (at midday the sun is due south in most of the northern hemisphere), then turn clockwise by the number of degrees shown.
In a masjid
The masjid's own Qibla direction, set when it was built, comes first. Use this for travel, at home, at work or in a new prayer room.
