How this calculator works

It adds your cash, gold, silver, investments, business stock and the money owed to you that you expect back, then takes off debts that are due now. If what is left reaches the nisab, Zakat is one fortieth (2.5%) of it.

The nisab

The nisab is the least amount of wealth on which Zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Many scholars advise the silver amount, as it is lower and so more of the poor benefit. Choose the one your scholars follow.

Points to check with a scholar

  • Whether jewellery worn by women is counted. Scholars differ.
  • How to count pension funds and long-term loans.
  • A full Hijri year must pass on the wealth. Many people pick one date each year, such as in Ramadan.
