What Al-Awwal means
Al-Awwal means the First. He existed before everything, and there was nothing before Him (57:3). Everything else has a beginning, but Allah has no beginning. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained it in his dua: 'You are the First, there is nothing before You' (Muslim).
