What Al-Waliyy means
Al-Waliyy means the Protecting Friend and Helper. He is the close ally of the believers: He brings them out of darkness into light (2:257), helps them and takes care of their affairs. A person who has Allah as his protector needs no one else.

ٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ ۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَوْلِيَآؤُهُمُ ٱلطَّٰغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ ٱلنُّورِ إِلَى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ ۗ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُنَزِّلُ ٱلْغَيْثَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا قَنَطُوا۟ وَيَنشُرُ رَحْمَتَهُۥ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْوَلِىُّ ٱلْحَمِيدُ
Living by this name
Come close to Allah through the obligatory duties, then add voluntary good deeds, as the hadith qudsi about the friends of Allah teaches (Bukhari). Pray as Yusuf did: 'Anta waliyyi fid-dunya wal-akhirah', You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter (12:101).
